The Palm Court…
My new edition, I worked from life and a photograph to document the detail of one of my favourite rooms in the world. The Palm Court Burgh Island Hotel.
I’ve celebrated births, deaths and marriages in this room for 50 years. This is the first in a series where I will be doing very detailed pieces in homage to my beautiful muse that is Burgh Island. One day I’ll add them to a book….but for now I’m happy being a painter and there’s still a million I want to paint…
I’m really studying the architecture, fine detailing of the design, and the carefully curated furniture, antiques and pieces that make this place so special. The way the stained glass peacock dome scatters soft colours in certain light, the way the curves of the fountain are framed so beautifully.
It’s a break from my more free flow emotional elemental expressive work, it’s a way to remember more. It’s like me studying the freckles on my children’s faces when they were little, it’s wanting to remember everything about something you love.
